After a couple hours, the sun came out, the kids were swimming and Randy and I were the only ones left standing over an 8-foot sand turtle. From the first snow sculpture in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 2001 to now, I have helped create over 20 snow sculptures. In 2005 it was Randy and my vision to bring a snow sculpting competition to Loveland. In 2010 with the cooperation of Engaging Loveland and many community volunteers, Loveland held its first competition. This past year our event was officially sanctioned by the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Organization sending our winners to represent Colorado at the U.S. nationals Over the years, I have learned, having well thought out models and visual aids that are to scale, make all the difference in the world. In 2002, I worked on my first wax model for the snow sculpture in Breckenridge, Colorado Two memorable pieces won People's Choice awards. Winning these tells us the people understood the message we carved out of snow and voted for us.
I wouldn't be able to continue with my passion for sculpting snow, or without the love and support of my biggest fans, my wife Denise and my two sons Steve III and Ben. It has been my honor as both of my boys have competed with me during Loveland's event the past 2 years. I continue to work with clay, wax, poly-resins and bronze to create scale-sized models for the snow sculptures. Currently I'm working on my model for Loveland 2014 and looking forward to making my hometown event GROW to its potential.
